“Capturing a facet of these experiences and suspending it with the sensuous, buttery viscosity of oil paint is what my work is all about. It begins with a visceral reaction - be it the mood, lighting, emotion, or sense of place – then I begin the process of painting by discovering abstract shapes, understanding the ephemeral light sources, defining the architecture and perspective, and focusing on making sure the foundation of the painting is strong and articulate. Then my mind quiets and I execute the painting “alla prima”, or as instinctively and quickly as possible. Finishing with juicy calligraphic highlights adds intensity and assists in describing form and direction of light.” Inspired by the distinctive works of Russian Impressionist painters Nicolai Fechin and Sergi Bongart, their masterful use of bold color, vivid brushwork, and painterly style reflects in her continual development as an artist.
A narrative work of art inspires its own story, one that’s personal to each viewer. Effectively done, it can convey a sense of the past and future while depicting a present moment. Be it the message in human gesture, or capturing the presence and stature of an old building, these relationships to one another are the common bond that differentiate, yet unite us all.
Biographical Sketch
Before her painting years, Barbara began her career in the legal and international consulting industry. After deciding painting was her primary interest, she studied art at the Etruscan Art School in Italy. Her art education continued at King’s Art Academy in Utah where the intense workshop format attracted some of the best instructors in the nation. She also apprenticed with Gregory Stocks, an internationally renowned artist and instructor. Before her move to Oregon, she continued her plein-air studies with several prominent Utah artists in the historic town of Spring City.
She has been involved in numerous group and featured artist exhibitions, and is a member of Oil Painters of America. Her work is currently represented in Oregon by Attic Gallery in Portland, Kabanu Gallery in Bend, Mary Lou Zeek Gallery in Salem, and Fuel in Seattle. Barbara also accepts unique custom commission requests for individuals and corporations.
She lives in Silverton, Oregon and her studio overlooks a colorful menagerie of horses, goats, sheep, cats, and her special dog Toby who sleeps by her side when she paints.
