Observing the vibrancy and repose of nature in all its varied facets invites exploration more deeply. All these elements evoke the desire to respond and condense the story into a single moment using a direct and contemporary approach.
“Capturing a facet of these experiences and suspending it with the sensuous, buttery viscosity of oil paint is what my work is all about. It begins with a visceral reaction – be it the mood, lighting, emotion, spirit, or sense of place. Then I begin the process of painting by discovering abstract shapes, understanding the ephemeral light sources, defining the structure and perspective, and focusing on making sure the foundation of the painting is strong and articulate. Then my mind quiets and I execute the painting as instinctively as possible trying to include the various elements and color I was sensing at that time. Finishing with juicy calligraphic highlights adds intensity and assists in describing form and direction of light.”
Before her painting years, Barbara was in the legal industry for 15 years, vice president of an international consulting firm in the health and wellness industry, then in 1998 was finally able to pursue her love of art. Painting alongside other plein-air painters in a small artist colony, studying at the Etruscan Art School in Italy, and also working with an art academy guided her work.
Her paintings have been shown in several galleries, and her work is included in public and private collections. Over the years she has been featured in several articles and publications, and she has also participated in numerous solo shows in the Pacific Northwest. She paints landscapes, cityscapes, animals, and anything found in nature. Barbara’s art studio in the historic town of Silverton, Oregon.
Barbara’s attention to color is strengthened by her attention to composition and light. Her images glow. Seemingly ordinary places and objects become heightened to revel an almost otherworldly presence emanating from within them. Her paintings, observational in a respectful yet perceptive way, draw the viewer into the piece emotionally. It is easy to stand in front of her paintings and find yourself truly engaged” -Liz Nielsen, Chicago Art Institute
